Subject: Re: Gamma Radiation

The short answer is that gamma radiation is the strongest electromagnetic wave on the spectrum. These waves have a very high frequency and can only be stopped by materials like lead and concrete. They are given off by stars, but we can also create them. They are radioactive and can cause cell mutations (thus where the Hulk story came from). While mutations may and usually do occur, they do not result in superhero traits. :)

Hi Max,

We will learn some basic chemistry facts, such as matter, atoms, and molecules. However, 6th grade science is mostly physics (the study of matter and its motion), ecology (study of the environment), and some biology (study of living things).

Dissections are no longer in our curriculum, but we might do one at the end of this year, or some time next year in 7th grade. Stay tuned!

Subject: Re: Bunsen burner

A Bunsen burner is a piece of lab equipment (apparatus) that allows us to have a single flame on which to heat things. It is much like how a gas stove works. The gas comes through a tube, and when you spark it, a flame ignites. The flame looks like a lit match or candle, but you can control how big or small it gets by increasing or decreasing the supply of gas.

how come we do the test in the first week of school? i read what we were supposed to read but, why do it in the first week of school why not the second?

Wouldn't your eyes hurt more if something splashed into it and you have to put your eyes in water?

Hi Michael!

MCPS requires us to get the safety test done in the first week. No worries though right? You did great!

It might be uncomfortable to put your eyes in an eye wash, but being uncomfortable is better than allowing a chemical to damage your eye permanently. Don't worry too much. We've never had to use the eye wash because everyone in science class follows directions and wears eye protection when necessary. :)
